Today we stopped by the Bake It In A Cake [1] sale at the Cakespy [2] shop and managed to get some of the last cupcakes. Megan is a genius, see how lovely her cupcakes are? We got one chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and a cherry pie baked inside, and a vanilla cupcake with maple frosting with a banana cream pie baked inside. We also ran into Mary from Shelterrific [3], hi Mary!

We've named her Trudi. Judging by her head-to-body ratio, Trudi's a baby turret.

Leigh both designed the turret pattern and sewed it together (which, to me, is essentially magic).

This is the mural I stare at while I'm waiting for the Light Rail to arrive. For some reason the thing I focus on first is always Alice juxtaposed with the rice cooker. Something about the rushed worry next to a quiet kitchen appliance makes me giggle. Maker Faire Town Hall in Grand Rapids on Tuesday - Dale Dougherty to Host

Dale Dougherty, General Manager of MAKE magazine, will be visiting Grand Rapids next Tuesday to meet with the region's tech-design-arts community. He'll be there to meet with local makers and to invite them participate in the Detroit Maker Faire 2011.
Here are the details:
When: Tuesday, April 26, a town hall meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Where: GRid 70, 70 Ionia Ave. SW, Grand Rapid, MI
What: Town Hall meeting in Grand Rapids, open to the public and free of charge. This is an opportunity to meet Dale and to discuss the maker movement and the upcoming Detroit Faire. Maker Faire Detroit 2011 will draw together inventors, craftspeople, artists, and musicians for two days at Detroit's Henry Ford Museum.

Granny Stripe Blanket
I love this modern take on the granny square with The Purl Bee's new pattern to make a granny stripe blanket. The photo above is a great detail shot showing the different color options but I love the idea of even making the stripes closer together and having a shade of lovely colors to add in the mix.

I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies [1] from the NY Times recipe that everybody was going crazy over a few years ago, myself included [2]. Despite weighing all the ingredients I appear to have halved the flour or doubled the butter or something because this batch spreads like crazy. Is there a way to add more flour to cookie dough once the chocolate chips are are mixed in? I'm assuming not since the new flour wouldn't be coated in butter the way it's supposed to, and there would be a lot of overmixing of the flour. Oh well, these are yummy but not very pretty. Here I've scooped them onto a cookie sheet to freeze individually so I can bake one or two at a time.

If you're using waste yarn, just thread a couple yards of scrap yarn onto a blunt yarn needle and slip all of the stitches right onto the waste yarn. If you're using a long circular that's the same sizes as your pattern needles, you can knit that marker placement row right onto the long needle (here's where a set of interchangable needles and a spare extra long cable is very handy).
The yoke should come to your armpits.
Since the fabric can roll up a bit, especially if you have it on a long circular needle as I did (it tends to behave more naturally on waste yarn, when it's not fighting the curl of a cable), and because this particular sweater is fitted, you might want to hold down the edge of the yoke at your pits when you check the fit. I pulled mine down just barely, since I know the fabric will relax just a hair after its bath. Working the whole thing chicken-arms fashion as I'm doing here also lets me try the fit of the shoulders with some action.

Mostly Carved Away Eggshell
Instructables user bbstudio creates intricately carved eggshells that are breathtaking and baffling. This particular egg, titled Goose on Geometry, is an entry in the Instructables Egg-Bot challenge. One of bbstudio's similar pieces was posted with a brief description of how the look was achieved.

Exploded Tattoo is a collaboration between painter Anna Stump, photographer Ted Meyer, and various models with single-image tattoos. For each model, a 9'x8' painting was made to correspond to their body art, then the model and painting were staged for the photos. The end result is an original and stunning interpretation.

Portraits of the Queen Made From Buttons
Bonkers About Buttons posted these amazing portraits of the Queen of England that are made entirely out of buttons.
British artist, Ann Carrington has an impressive body of work spanning the last 20 years and in celebration of the Queen's 80th birthday, she was commissioned to produce some amazing pieces using pearl, troca and agoya shell buttons for the Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor.

This is a bottle inexpensive go to wine for nights like this one where I'm doing nothing much more complicated than baking the Pistachio and Chorizo Cake [1] from David Lebovitz. (It's cooling now and smells amazing.) But I'm not here to tell you about the cake, I'm here to tell you about this silly situation I find myself in at my local market that involves the buying of said wine. We're lucky enough to live really close to a happy natural foods grocery that I end up in most every day picking up ingredients for one thing or another. We tend to buy wine one bottle at a time when we know we'll want it with dinner and happily the market has a small but reliable selection. I don't buy wine every day, but it seems that when I am buying wine I get the same checkout girl. Every single time. If I'm in for some emergency butter she's nowhere to be seen, but if I have a cart full of groceries and a bottle of wine it's hilariously inevitable that I'll end up in her line. I've become hyper aware of this and it's made my Raised Catholic Shame kick into overdrive. She's lovely and friendly and I'm sure completely unaware of me, but still I cringe a bit when I find myself once again buying booze in her checkout aisle. I have not seen her in the store in weeks but tonight my haul of no-preservatives chorizo, unsalted pistachios, organic dried tomatoes and sesame seeds from the bulk aisle included some table wine and guess whose checkout line I found myself in?
Also seen in the frame are my iPhone and the trusty Jambox [2] speaker that I've come to adore because it lets me hear things over the noise of washing dishes. It's sturdy and has rubberized top and bottom surfaces, it's wireless and connects to your music source with Bluetooth, and has a recharegable battery. I carry it around the kitchen with me and couldn't like it more. We have Gray Hex [3] but I sort of wanted the Red Dot [4], except our kitchen is filled with orange accents and I fear I'm not the sort that can pull together orange and red.
