Delicious, trend-setting Sous Vide cooking entails food that's vacuum-sealed in plastic pouches and then immersed in a precisely controlled hot water bath to achieve optimal doneness. We were talking about it last year on the Makezine.com blog and now we show you how to make your own Sous Vide cooker in the new issue of MAKE magazine. We've also got the entire project online at Make: Projects. Let us know how it goes when you make your own immersion cooker and impress your friends!

Australian artist BUFFdiss makes amazing masking tape graffiti. Checking out his Flickr stream, it's cool to see how his style has progressed over time, and that he's still devoted to making his signature art using only masking tape. Check out this interview/profile that Upper Playground did of BUFFdiss, if you haven't seen it yet. His take on bringing visual interest to urban decay is fascinating. Who knew masking tape could be so versatile?

It's a delight to see a machine manipulating a silk necktie with carefully designed mechanisms. I find this video mesmerizing! Sean @ Make: Online writes:
This video from sculptor Seth Goldstein shows one cycle of the operation of his piece Why Knot?, which is described as "[a] kinetic sculpture that continually ties and unties a necktie." While the video leaves me just a bit dubious about how long it could really run without human intervention, I'm impressed by the dedication, effort, and patience required to get it to work even once.

I'm completely enamored by Tom Falconer's gorgeous bubble photography, and he was nice enough to share his tips and tricks with us. Tom is a Tahoe resident, so he's blessed by beautiful surroundings and cold temps that make shots like the one above possible. When I asked about shooting frozen bubbles, he said: "Frozen bubbles are easier to shoot than regular ones. Once it freezes, it just sits there. But floating bubbles in the wild are unpredictable and almost always tricky to photograph sharply." Check out this shot of a frozen bubble popping slowly:
The caption for this shot reads: "Bubbles get a bit rubbery when they freeze, so when they pop it happens really slow. It was around 15-20 F and this bubble took about two minutes to freeze. When it's colder they freeze really fast and will shatter more like glass. This bubble took about fifteen minutes to disintegrate."
The way Tom captures reflections in the bubbles is truly notable as well:

Head over to the Makezine post to read his bubble formula and tips on bubble photography, and be sure to check out the rest of his Flickr stream for more eye candy.

Love this great upcycle project from our friends over at RePlayGround. This room divider is made up of more than one thousand plastic film canisters.
The canisters are strung together with elastic giving it flexibility to be rolled up when not in use and when shipped. The rolling action resembles how a roll of film winds up.
It took more than three months for the crew to collect the film canisters from several New York film processing stores. [via Re-Nest]

I love the detail in this awesome Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening banner from ATaylor333 on Sprite Stitch. It even glows in the dark!
My brother asked me, jokingly, last year if I would cross stitch him the title screen to Link's Awakening. Well, imagine his surprise when this past christmas he unwrapped his fantastic new wall hanging. It is 1:1, so each stitch is a pixel, and parts of it glow in the dark. It measure approximately 8 3/4" by 13 1/2".
That is one lucky brother!

I have two very different eaters. One is incredibly picky and always has been. The other was the baby who put everything in her mouth, but is now going through a slight picky phase. Kids don't know that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. In fact, it seems that my kids often form opinions about food that they've never even tasted!
"Yuck - I hate cauliflower!"
Then I gently bring it to their attention: "Have you ever tried cauliflower?"
"Well ... It looks funny."
"But what does it taste like?"
I'm sure these conversations about food are something that all parents can relate to. Meal time is often a frustrating experience for all involved. I'm not an expert, and my kids aren't perfect eaters, but I thought I'd share a few of the ways we've learned to make food a little more exciting.

It's the winter and it's January. When the temperatures drop we tend to crave warmth: comforting soups, thick stews, and baked pastas dripping with cheese and chunks of juicy tomatoes.
However, in January, freshly committed to our New Year's resolution to lose those last 10 pounds, our minds tell us to avoid baked pastas dripping with cheese in favor of lighter soups, salads, and lean proteins.
Guess what? This year, you can have your cake and eat it too. Metaphorically, of course. If lasagna is your grim weather go-to dinner, you can make a lighter version that skips calorie-dense meats and sausages and omits the creamy ricotta cheese that helps pile on the pounds.
Omitting some of the more indulgent ingredients not only eliminates fat and calories, but it reduces the number of steps and amount of preparation time for the recipe. To begin this lasagna recipe, you'll toss sliced vegetables with olive oil and roast them until just tender. Then, layer them between the no-boil noodles, mozzarella cheese, and your favorite savory marinara.
?While the lasagna bakes, toss together a few cups of crisp romaine lettuce and a few of your favorite colorful vegetables to serve alongside dinner. If you're feeling adventurous, pour yourself a glass heart-healthy red wine to sip on the side.

I frequently pick up bits of fabric and trim I'm never quite sure how I'll use. When I realized I had a lot of Valentine-themed events coming up, I decided to make a fun apron out of a quarter-yard piece of fabric I picked up. When I run events, sometimes I like an apron that's more show than functional, so I decided to see what I could do with a bunch of odds and ends.

This recipe is so delicious and classic to our family, I just had to share. The base of the soup is mainly tomatoes but the addition of the rice noodles/vermicelli, meatballs, and tender vegetables just makes everything click together.
This recipe is great because it is so versatile. We make all different versions: vegetarian, meat-loving, and everywhere in between. I made a version with tofu, shrimp, and mushrooms, but the recipe has more veggies and adds some yummy homemade meatballs.
